Our History

Established in 1975, the Toronto Child Psychoanalytic Program (TCPP) was originally modeled on those offered by the Anna Freud Centre and Tavistock Clinic in London, England, and the Cleveland and Chicago programs in the United States. We maintain ties with other adult analytic training programs in the Toronto, Ontario.

In October 2013, the Board of Directors felt that a new name would better indicate who we are to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), people interested in therapy training, families who receive treatment from our candidates and graduates, and the general public.

The Canadian Institute for Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy’s (CICAPP) faculty consists primarily of graduates of TCPP/CICAPP and psychoanalysts who have experience in child, adolescent, and youth psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The name change better reflects our mandate:

  • Canadian: Continuing to educate distance learners across the country in our unique child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy training.

  • Institute: Reflects the status of our training and the provision of different events, including a Fundamental program to introduce people to the type of work we do with children and adolescents.

  • Adolescent: Communicates that we train and work with this age group in addition to children. Starting in 2025, we expanded our program to include youths.

  • Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: Positions psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy as the curriculum and treatment focus.

ABOUT US

Founded in 1975, the Canadian institute for Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (CICAPP) provides training in the theory and technique of psychoanalytic psychotherapy for professionals working with children, adolescents, and youth. Candidates are trained to assess for normal functioning and psychopathology and to conduct psychotherapy. The training qualifies graduates to consult, supervise, and teach in agencies concerned with child, adolescent, and youth mental health.
